Upgraded to Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10)
I upgraded my desktop last night from Ubuntu Feisty Fawn to Gutsy Gibbon. I must say that it was a pretty disappointing upgrade. The things that broke are:
- My mouse behaviour inexplicably changed to “focus on click” from “focus on mouse over” – and the settings to change it back are not under the “Mouse” section of the preferences.
- Turning on desktop effects caused all window borders to disappear. It took a bunch of searching to figure out how to fix it.
- Turning on desktop effects caused my keyboard shortcuts to turn off. I like to have F1-F4 change me to different workspaces and the windows key open a terminal. I couldn’t get it to work. It was ignoring the Gnome settings.
- Turning on desktop effects caused my workspace switcher to break. This appears to be a known issue where Compiz and Gnome don’t play well together.
I’ve used Linux for quite a while, and I was impressed with the release of Ubuntu because things “just worked.” Now, they seem to be falling away from that in order to achieve neat desktop effects and things. I hope it doesn’t turn into Gentoo.
