Calendar Frustrations
There are a lot of neat things that I can almost do with Evolution, my Palm and webcal, but I don’t seem to be able to make them happen. It’s kind of annoying, actually. Even though I use Linux pretty much exclusively, this is the sort of thing that really drives me nuts: applications are only 80% feature-complete. Here’s what I want to work:
- At Cambridge, talk announcements are centralized through Talks.cam. You can make lists on Talks.cam and access them via webcal. I have done this, and it works fine with Evolution 2.0.4. However, when I upgraded to 2.8.1, it broke. It turns out that I need to prepend a “www” to the hostname for some inexplicable reason. Anyway, now that works, but it shouldn’t have broken.
- Evolution ignores proxy settings when trying to download the webcal.
- Gpilotd should just work. I have never successfully gotten it to work via Bluetooth. Using the USB connection only works if I restart gpilotd, initiate a sync, cancel the sync and then initiate another one. Freaking ridiculous.
- Categories in Palm DateBook should sync with categories in Evolution. They don’t. All category information in thrown out.
- I can only sync one calendar with my Palm. I would like for the Talks.cam webcal data to wind up along with my personal calendar on the Palm. This doesn’t happen. I can only specify one or the other. Some people also have this annoyance.
- The webcal format that Evolution generates doesn’t parse (at least by Google Calendar). I thought it would be slick to use the publish functionality to be able to see my calendar in Google. Doesn’t work.
So, little pieces work, but it’s not even close to being end-to-end. In a nutshell, I want Evolution to grab the talks data and then synchronize it all to my Palm via Bluetooth.
