Hurricane Notes from East Texas

« 31 August 2005 | 20:06 | General | No Comments »

I’m from a place just east of Houston (about seven hours west of New Orleans) and my family still lives there. My father just wrote with some news from the area. I asked him how the weather was.

No rain at all. Just lots of refugees. This is going to be [...]

Stewart Mandel on Picking OSU

« 31 August 2005 | 19:56 | NCAA Football, Sports | No Comments »

Stewart Mandel answered the question of why he thinks Ohio State will contend for the national championshipp:

…there are eight teams — Texas, Tennessee, Ohio State, Florida, Michigan, Miami, LSU and Iowa — that I see as being on roughly the same footing. Of those, however, the Buckeyes are the only ones who possess all of [...]

Joe Paterno Update

« 30 August 2005 | 23:11 | General | No Comments »

Stewart Mandel has written two recent articles on Penn State coach Joe Paterno, one about the upcoming season and the other about possible eventual replacements. Says Mandel:

The outsider looks at Penn State and sees a fallen program that has won just three of its past 16 Big Ten games, didn’t have a single player drafted [...]

Game Review: Half Life 2

« 30 August 2005 | 15:28 | Computing, Games, Gaming, Reviews | 1 Comment »

I know I am really behind the times here, just now writing a review of Half Life 2, but with all the buzz right now about the upcoming additional level Lost Coast and the expansion pack this fall Aftermath, it seemed like as good a time as any to talk about why I am so [...]

Enlightenment DR17 on Gentoo

« 30 August 2005 | 1:26 | Computing, E17, Linux | No Comments »

I just installed the Enlightenment Window Manager on my Gentoo Laptop. It went relatively smoothly, following the instructions from here and here. One thing that was not clear from the documentation was that you need to have avifile installed (just do the usual emerge) and you need to be able to find the [...]

Clarett To Be Cut

« 29 August 2005 | 16:50 | NFL, Sports | No Comments »

Well, I guess I have to eat my words on Maurice Clarett. He’s going to be cut by the Denver Broncos this week according to his agent.

Unable to practice much or play at all during the preseason, Clarett will be released by the Denver Broncos later this week, his agent said Sunday.
“The kid [...]

Upcoming Freshman Stars at PSU

« 29 August 2005 | 8:56 | NCAA Football, Sports | No Comments »

Corey McCartney at CNNSI discusses two new freshman recruits at Penn State that could have a big impact on the season.

Derrick Williams, WR - 6-0, 189 pounds
High school: Eleanor Roosevelt, Greenbelt, Md.
Who said Joe Paterno lost his recruiting touch? With 4.31 speed in the 40-yard-dash, the explosive Williams could make Nittany Lions faithful quickly forget [...]

Ricky Williams is Back

« 28 August 2005 | 23:15 | NFL, Sports | No Comments »

It looks like Ricky Williams is back in action. In yesterday’s preseason game, he ran for 59 yards and a touchdown in the first half against Tampa Bay. With any luck, he’ll be a force on the field when he gets back from his suspension.

Brett Favre’s Last Season

« 27 August 2005 | 8:10 | NFL, Sports | No Comments »

I picked Brett Favre in the Ames Super Tecmo draft because I think he’s going to have a big year and finish his career with a bang. He’s really worked hard to prepare for the season and will be looking to put up big numbers, I think.

What people aren’t recognizing is that Favre is [...]

Fantasy Football Draft II

« 25 August 2005 | 16:24 | NFL, Sports | No Comments »

Last night, I particpated in the Athletic Supporters draft, building my team the Cambridge Cantabs. I was number five out of twelve. I couldn’t get Julius Jones, because I didn’t want to draft him first and he was taken early in the second round. Oh, well. I still got a strong [...]

Fossil Poaching

« 25 August 2005 | 8:04 | Science and Math | No Comments »

I hadn’t ever heard of this before, but apparently the lucrative market, online and otherwise, for interesting fossils has led to an epidemic of fossil poaching.

“It’s like panning for gold,” said Rusty Dersch, a Forest Service geologist. “The first time you find a few flakes, and you want to find a few more. It [...]

Big Year for Julius Jones?

« 24 August 2005 | 17:01 | NFL, Sports | No Comments »

Peter King, in CNNSI’s Monday Morning Quarterback says that Dallas RB Julius Jones will have a huge year this year:

Take my word for it. If you have a fantasy team, take him very high. He’ll be one of the top five backs in the league this year. Parcells is going to feature Jones big-time. After [...]

Correll Buckhalter Out for Season

« 24 August 2005 | 16:56 | NFL | No Comments »

It looks like Eagles running back Correll Buckhalter is out for the season with knee surgery. He was one of the running backs that I drafted in Ames Super Tecmo, so I was forced to drop him. I replaced him with a backup kicker - San Diego’s Nate Kaeding.
Back in real life, this [...]

Fantasy Football Draft I

« 22 August 2005 | 19:13 | NFL | No Comments »

On Saturday, I particpated in the draft for the Ames Super Tecmo league on Yahoo. It was my first time doing this and I was picking seventh. Here’s my lineup (not in any particular order):

Brett Favre - QB, Green Bay
David Carr - QB, Houston
Willis McGahee - RB, Buffalo
Duce Staley - RB, Pittsburgh
DeShaun Foster [...]

The Last Season of a Legend

« 9 August 2005 | 8:02 | NFL, Sports | No Comments »

Jerry Rice is entering his final season. Largely considered the best receiver of all time, this is his 21st year as a pro, although his first season in a Broncos uniform. It is unfortunate for him to be relegated to backup status, but it’ll be great to see him on the field.

This will [...]

Notre Dame Join the Big Ten?

« 7 August 2005 | 7:47 | NCAA Football, Sports | No Comments »

Stewart Mandel at CNNSI discusses why Notre Dame may be getting motivated to join the Big Ten. (Currently ND is independent of football conference.) Mandel writes

First of all, I don’t know if it’s greed that’s driving the Irish’s stubbornly held independence or naïveté. As you may have read, the new BCS contract includes [...]
