2000 Election Results By County
This is a really interesting map of the election results in the 2000 presidential campaign, by county, for the entire country. Most of it is what one expects: urban areas are blue and rural areas are red, most of New England and all of the Northern California coast are blue. What I found most interesting was the large chunk of blue counties in South Texas. These are still very rural areas, but the population is dominated by Mexian immigrants. It is interesting that they would vote so predominantly for Gore. I am somewhat uninformed as to what their perceived differences would be in terms of immigration reform. One might expect that conservatives would want to preserve the European heritage of the US, while one might also expect that the union-supported liberals would want to prevent an influx of cheap laborers. Not sure how that one works out…
